Dry Needling

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique used to treat pain and movement impairments by a certified specialist.

The technique uses a very thin needle which is inserted through the skin into the affected muscle. Dry needling is also known as trigger point dry needling.

Dry needling is based on Western Neuro-Anatomy principles. Although the needles are similar to acupuncture, the placement of dry needles is based on the body’s trigger points. A trigger point is a sensitive spot within a muscle that is tender to the touch, and touching a trigger point may cause pain to other parts of the body. The principle behind dry needling is that holes as small as skin pores stimulate a chemical and neurological healing response, which helps to restore healthy tissue in the body.

Dry Needling is a relatively new and exciting therapy with potential to help individuals with pain management, flexibility and accelerated healing. We use dry needling to release or inactivate trigger points, to relieve pain and/or improve range of motion.  Preliminary research supports that dry needling helps to improve pain control and reduce muscle tightness/tension which can help speed up your return to active rehabilitation.
