Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a metabolic injury that impacts a constellation of your body’s systems.
Under-fueling is the biggest contributor to poor performance. If you are an active person you are at risk for RED-S due to a failure to meet your energy demands (intentionally or unintentionally) for your sport and to live.
Signs you might have RED-S
- Have you experienced a plateau in performance?
- Have you had more than 1 stress fracture?
- Do you display self-control around food (ex. set food rules or have “good” or “bad” food list)?
- Females, have you lost your menstrual cycle?
- If you answered yes to any of these questions, allow our registered dietitians to make an individualized approach to help you take action and fuel your life.
Eating for Sports Performance
A basic performance meal plan includes the right balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to maximizing your athletic potential. Plans will vary based on your age, sex, height and weight and exercise level both in and off season.
But this is just the beginning. At the Women’s Sports Health Program, board certified sports dietitians provide evidence based interventions that support performance and overall athlete health and recovery.
Services include:
- Specific sporting requirements
- Special dietary needs
- Nutritional analysis
- Optimizing body composition goals; fat loss, fat-free mass gain, strength and power improvements, or increased endurance capacity.
- Indirect calorimetry and bioelectrical impedance provide objective baseline and ongoing measurements.
- Macronutrient dose and timing with periodization to improve metabolic flexibility depending on the intensity and duration of the training session and training block goals.
- Energy availability
- Hydration and fluid balance
- Micronutrients, calcium, vitamin and iron deficiency are common in women, but antioxidants and phytonutrients play additional roles in managing exercise related oxidative stress.
- Ergogenic nutritional supplements for performance enhancement dose and timing.
