What investments is Hartford HealthCare making in care delivery?

  • Hartford HealthCare is planning a $2.5 billion transformational investment to reimagine healthcare delivery in Connecticut, solidifying its commitment to redesigning how our patients experience care.
  • Through the design and construction of state-of-the-art facilities and new care models, we are creating a system that fosters accessibility, efficiency, and lower costs. Incorporating the latest technological advances into our facilities will ensure efficient operations, environmental sustainability, and the best possible outcomes for our patients.
  • Connecticut deserves this remarkable investment. Access to exceptional healthcare is a hallmark of economic vitality and creates an extraordinary region in which to work, live, and play. These major enhancements will further identify the state as a coveted area for healthcare, education, and training.

What does this remarkable investment mean for Connecticut?

  • Access to exceptional healthcare is a hallmark of economic vitality and creates an extraordinary region in which to work, live, and play. These major enhancements will further identify the state as a coveted area for healthcare, education, and training.

What does this investment mean for patients?

  • These new, proposed facilities will best address the increasing acuity needs of our patients, while maintaining our focus on access, affordability, excellence, and equity, which we call A2E2. We have developed processes to care for lower-acuity patients outside of settings like hospitals and in more appropriate, cost-effective settings like urgent care and ambulatory care centers.

What is included in the plan?

  • Today’s patients have increasingly complex medical needs. HHC 2035 addresses how to best serve our patients through the latest technology; enhanced hospitality and amenity options such as private beds; and the most advanced surgical platforms. A commitment to environmental sustainability is a priority throughout the project.
  • Over the next decade, construction is expected to take place at Hartford Hospital, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, and MidState Medical Center, with the initial phases starting at Hartford Hospital. New facilities, including medical buildings and parking structures, will anchor the project. Additional enhancements throughout the hospitals will take place to upgrade existing structures.

How has Hartford HealthCare been a good steward?

  • Hartford HealthCare has a history of innovation, transformation, and excellence. We are focused on building world-class facilities as we continue our tremendous A2E2 journey.
  • In the last few years alone, Hartford HealthCare has greatly contributed to the changing healthcare landscape in Connecticut by:
    • Becoming one of the only health systems in the country to achieve “A” safety grades at every acute-care hospital in the system two years in a row, solidifying our standing among the nation’s best for quality.
    • Improving access to care through 56 new urgent and retail care centers across the state (21 locations in the last year alone).
    • Creating a digital front door in partnership with K Health, facilitating 24/7 access to primary care.
    • Partnering with Pennant Group to provide in-home health and hospice care.
    • Bringing healthcare services to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

Hartford HealthCare’s investment in Hartford Hospital

What investment is Hartford HealthCare making in Hartford Hospital?

  • Hartford HealthCare is planning $1.5 billion in enhancements to the campus of Hartford Hospital. These investments include new towers, parking garages, and buildings across its entire campus.

What will happen to the current hospital?

  • The main building of Hartford Hospital will remain intact throughout construction activity. Work will progress in phases around campus over a 10-year period, eventually culminating in new access points to the hospital and a completely modernized experience.

When will construction start and finish?

Construction fencing is up along Jefferson and Seymour Streets now. The first phase of construction, starting in the first quarter of 2025, includes the demolition of an existing parking garage and the construction of a new structure that will include parking, a welcome center, food and retail options, rooftop gardens, and more. Construction is expected to be ongoing for approximately 10 years.

As a patient, will my care be disrupted?

  • Plans are in place to address all services impacted by construction before work is underway.

Where will people park during construction?

  • Parking for the general public will not be impacted during construction. All colleagues have been assigned specific parking areas throughout construction. Once construction is complete, state-of-the-art parking facilities will contribute to the modernized experience on campus.

How will Hartford HealthCare handle the historic buildings around campus?

  • Hartford HealthCare is committed to preserving the rich history of the neighborhood while building state-of-the-art facilities that meet the needs of the most complex patient. This includes authentically restoring some buildings, while removing others. No neighborhood residents will be displaced as a result of this project.

Will this facility be environmentally conscious?

  • Hartford HealthCare takes environmental sustainability very seriously. This construction project will utilize the latest best practices to ensure energy efficiency, the use of renewable resources, and a significant reduction in our carbon footprint, through our carbon-neutral pledge.

How will you ensure equity/supplier diversity?

  • Hartford HealthCare has a strong history of utilizing supplier diversity practices and ensuring equity among its work force. The health system will continue to assess supplier opportunities with both existing and potentially new vendors, both directly and in partnership with construction affiliates, as well as build on its legacy of fostering equity in every aspect of operations.
