Spine Surgery

The Ayer Neuroscience Institute is providing more advanced treatment options for spine surgery than ever before.

Neurosurgeons utilize the most sophisticated surgeon-guided robotic technology, Stealth GPS navigation and state-of-the-art microscopes available today. Providing pinpoint precision, these surgical technologies combined with the latest implants help to minimize pain and speed up recovery, both top priorities for patients undergoing spine surgery.

Surgical Treatments include:

  • Laminectomy: Removal of the lamina (roof) of one or more vertebrae to create more space for the nerves. This can be performed as an open surgery or with a minimally invasive method.
  • Discectomy: Combination of decompression and removal of the herniated disc fragment, which can be done through an open surgery or a minimally invasive approach.
  • Spinal fusion: Decompression and stabilization with instruments (rods and screws) and bone graft to stabilize the spine if arthritis has progressed to spinal instability.
  • Artificial Disc Replacement: Worn or damaged disc material between the vertebrae is removed and replaced with the latest synthetic or “artificial” disc.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator: Placement of electrode or array into the spinal canal, with wires connected to a generator, to alleviate pain in the back and/or legs.
  • Spinal Tumor Surgery: A variety of procedures to remove tumors involving the spinal vertebrae or causing pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerves.
  • Kyphoplasty / Vertebroplasty: Procedures that place cement into a fractured vertebra.

Advanced Technologies

Mazor X TM

Mazor XTM allows surgeons the ability to pre-plan your spine surgery using 3D software to create a customized procedure that is unique to each patient’s condition.

StealthStationTM and Globus ExcelsiusGPSTM

StealthStationTM and Globus ExcelsiusGPSTM are surgical guidance systems for spine surgery. It makes surgery safer and helps surgeons ensure implants and hardware placement are even more precise.

Synaptive’s Modus V™ 3D Exoscope

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is the first hospital in New England to use Synaptive’s Modus V™ 3D exoscope technology for brain and spine surgeries.

Modus V is a robotic digital microscope. Derived from technology originally created for the International Space Station, Modus V is a fully-automated, hands-free, robotically-controlled digital microscope with advanced visualization that supports a wide range of surgical approaches.

The Modus V provides the surgeon with a 3D visualization of anatomical structures with natural depth perception. It provides more depth of field than traditional surgical microscopes and has double the magnification of comparable microscopes.

Unlike traditional microscopes, the Modus V allows everyone in the operating room to experience what the surgeon is viewing in 3D on 55” 3D Ultra HD 4K monitors. This allows for increased workflow and collaboration across the surgical team, ultimately resulting in improved patient outcomes.
