Gastrointestinal Cancer Team

The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute collaborates with the Hartford HealthCare Digestive Health Center when diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal cancers, which affect the digestive tract and other organs within the digestive system.

If you have gastrointestinal cancer, we ensure you get the most accurate diagnosis and effective treatment by providing a care team with a wide expanse of expertise.

Here are some specialists who may be part of your care team:

Medical Oncologists: Physicians with special training in diagnosing and treating cancer using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and other treatment modalities. At Hartford HealthCare, access to radiation therapy and/or infusion chemotherapy is provided as close to your home as possible.

Radiation Oncologists: Physicians who are experts in treating cancer using radiation.

Gastroenterologists: Experts who help medical oncologists diagnose and stage tumors. They can also help identify metastatic disease.

General Surgeons: Broadly experienced surgeons who may perform cancer surgery, depending on the case and the location of the cancer.

Thoracic Surgeons: These specialists, who focus on chest organs, perform minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, removing tumors accessed through multiple small incisions in the abdomen and chest.

Pathologists: Physicians trained to investigate the cause of disease by reviewing samples and providing fast, accurate reports that are used to diagnose and determine the best course of care.

Dietitians: Health professionals who focus on diet and nutrition and can help you optimize your nutrition during and after treatment.

Occupational/Physical Therapists: Experienced professionals who can help with any swelling (lymphedema), fatigue, weakness or pain related to your cancer.
