Bed Safety Volunteer The role of the Bed Safety Volunteer is to visit all patients who have been designated as a “Safety Risk” by the presence of a green triangle on their door. Volunteers check patients to ensure personal items and the call bell are within reach, and makes sure patients understand how to use their call bell. Volunteers also ensure any other patients needs are met. 3 hours, once a week, 2-semesters

Cancer Community Outreach Volunteer Our Cancer Community Outreach program participates in events around the region to distribute education materials and sends our Mobile Mammography van to various locations several days per week. Volunteers for this program would attend community events as representative of HHC Cancer Institute and Cancer Community Outreach Program (you would need your own transportation to these locations). At these events volunteers will assist staff with transportation of supplies and set up/break down of events, engage with participants and share information about our programs.

5 hours, 1-semester, minimum commitment is 2 events per month

Events usually occur on Tue, We, Thu, every week and 2 weekend days per month, typically from 9am – 2pm

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Collection

Collect items for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program at the Insitite of Living to help provide entertainment and a more home-like environment. Items include games, art supplies, sport supplies, crafts, etc.

CT Orthopedic institute Ambassador Interact with accompanying persons to inform them about waiting area, cafeteria, and gift shop. Ambassador takes calls from OR, sets up family members in glass house for doctors to come out and update. 3 hours, once a week

Emergency Department Volunteer Volunteers assist with tasks to maintain a smooth working flow around the ED area. Responsibilities include transporting patients, making up clean stretchers, runs to the lab, blood bank and Pharmacy, filling warmers with blankets,providing support person refreshment, stocking, etc. 3 hours, once a week

Expressive Arts Bereavement Program Holiday Fundraiser

Raise money for children's holiday party: gifts, sweets, cards, wrapping paper, gift cards.

Food 4 Health Collection

Collect healthy food items to be distributed to patients through our Food 4 Health program. Items would include brown rice, whole wheat pasta, canned tuna, low sodium broth, olive oil, whole wheat flour, etc.

Can be done anytime/multiple times throughout the year.

Food 4 Health Volunteer This program provides patients with access to specific healthy food items, free of charge, prescribed by their Hartford Hospital doctors.  Volunteers assist with patient registration, maintaining adequate food supply in shelves and refrigerators, maintaining food signage, maintaining a clean environment, maintaining handouts, assisting patients to car/taxi with bags using a cart. Future duties may include recipe research, kitchen demonstration, nutrition education.

4 hours, once a week, 6-month or 1-semester commitment

Food Pantry / Distribution Volunteers assist with bi-weekly food distribution to underserved population of Bridgeport. Will provide assistance at individual station. This position is held outside in conjunction with Connecticut Foodshare.

2 hours

Position can be a one-time event or ongoing commitment. Full volunteer onboarding is not required. Proof of COVID vaccine & booster and seasonal flu vaccine required. Great opportunity for solo or group event, ie fraternity, sorority, civic club, etc.

Geriatrics Program Collection

Raise money/collect items for the Geriatrics program at Hartford Hospital. Items include puzzle books and pencils, adult coloring books and colored pencils, playing cards, "reader" glasses, etc.

Keeping in Touch Program The goal of the Keeping In Touch program is to help maintain cognitive functioning in hospitalized older adults. Volunteers converse with patients, reminisce, read to them, play cards/games, do puzzles, listen to music, etc. Training requires one three-hour training session conducted by the geriatrics department, and two shifts shadowing a current volunteer. 3 hours, once a week, 2-semesters
