Bio

Dr. Richard Kershen, a Board Certified Urologic Surgeon with sub-specialty fellowship certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and expertise in urinary incontinence, voiding dysfunction and reconstructive pelvic surgery in both women and men.

Prior to joining Hartford Healthcare, Dr. Kershen practiced at the University of Vermont College of Medicine where he served as clinician, researcher, and educator at the Associate Professor level in the Department of Surgery/Division of Urology. In Vermont, he pioneered the development of, and served as Medical Director for Fletcher Allen Hospital’s Continence Center, the first multi-disciplinary center for the treatment of male and female pelvic disorders in New England.

Dr. Kershen completed his Residency in Urologic Surgery at The Boston University School of Medicine followed by a two-year Fellowship in Female Urology, Voiding Dysfunction, Neurourology and Urodynamics at The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Kershen is well published in scientific and medical journals and has presented original research at national and international conferences. He has participated in numerous clinical trials including studies of botulinum toxin (Botox) for the treatment of overactive bladder as well as novel inject-able urethral bulking agents for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. His most recent research has involved understanding lower urinary tract dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease as well as the prevention and treatment of complications related to vaginal mesh.

Dr. Kershen is a member of the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction, the International Continence Society, the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Urological Association and the New England Section of the AUA.

He prides himself on providing expert and compassionate care to his patients.
