Learn life-saving skills, from CPR and First Aid to Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

We offer a range of courses for both medical clinicians and the general public, including first aid and CPR for children, basic life support for healthcare providers, advanced cardiac life support, and pediatric advanced life support.

American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center

We are one of the largest training centers in the state of Connecticut, with over 350 instructors throughout CT and MA, and oversee 7 training sites that conduct training sessions in accordance with all AHA guidelines.  

Hartford Hospital CESI EMS is an approved American Heart Association (AHA) training center. We promote the mission of the AHA, fighting heart disease and stroke, and provide high quality AHA training in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, blood borne pathogens, EKG/pharmacology, and advanced airway.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider

4-hour course for health care providers 

The BLS Provider Course curriculum reflects the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

Learning objective: Review, organize, and prioritize the information and skills needed to manage a cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, or other life-threatening emergency. 

Topics:

  • 1- and 2-rescuer CPR for the adult, child, and infant
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use
  • Differences between adult, child, and infant rescue techniques
  • Bag-mask ventilation
  • Rescue breathing
  • Relief of choking for the adult, child, and infant
  • CPR with an advanced airway in place
  • Team dynamics

Intended Audience: Healthcare providers caring for patients both in prehospital and in-facility environments including nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, advanced practitioners, paramedics, and in-facility healthcare providers who work in a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare facility including a dentist office, skilled nursing, and assisted-living facilities.

Certifications:  Course completion card, valid for 2 years.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider

16-hour (2-day) course for health care providers who have never taken an ACLS course before.  

The ACLS Course reflects the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

Learning Objective: Review, organize, and prioritize information and skills needed to manage a cardiac arrest, and the time period immediately before and after a cardiac arrest.

Topics:

  • 1-Rescuer CPR and AED use 
  • Team dynamics 
  • Immediate post-cardiac arrest care 
  • Airway management/respiratory arrest 
  • Peri-arrest Rhythms (tachycardia, bradycardia) 
  • Arrest rhythms (VF, PVT, PEA, asystole)
  • Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) 
  • Stroke
  • Megacode treatment
  • Related pharmacology 

Intended Audience: Healthcare professionals involved in the management and treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest and cardiovascular emergencies, including personnel staffing emergency medicine, intensive care, or critical care departments, emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, residents, fellows, medical/nursing students, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may have a need to respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Prerequisites: Candidates must have and submit a copy of a current AHA Healthcare Provider ACLS card to the instructor.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider

16-hour (2-day) course for health care providers who have never taken a PALS course before.

The PALS Course reflects the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. 

Learning objective: Review, organize, and prioritize information and skills needed to manage a pediatric cardiac arrest, and the time period immediately before and after cardiac arrest.

  • Respiratory emergencies
  • Vascular access
  • Rhythm disturbances
  • Electrical therapy
  • Systemic approach to pediatric assessment

Intended Audience: Healthcare professionals who respond to emergencies involving infants and children, including personnel involved in the emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care, respiratory therapists, and paramedics.

Heartsaver® CPR, AED, and First Aid

For non-healthcare professionals with limited or no medical training who need a course completion card for their job (in order to meet job or regulatory requirements). These courses are not sufficient for anyone directly involved in patient care.

Heartsaver®  Pediatric First Aid

For childcare workers (coaches, teachers, camp counselors, etc.).  

Learning objective:

How to respond to medical emergencies, injuries, asthma, CPR and AED use, and a variety of pediatric first aid topics. Supplementary Materials Certificate issued by the AHA Instructor to satisfy Connecticut requirements for the Department of Public Health.

Family and Friends CPR

For those interested in learning the basics of CPR and first aid, including students, expectant parents and grandparents, babysitters, or anyone who wants to know what to do in an emergency situation.

Course Description: Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment using the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible.

  • Adult hands-only CPR
  • Child CPR with breaths
  • Adult and child AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use
  • Infant CPR
  • Choking in adults, children, and infants
