What happened:

Alison was scanning a 53-year-old patient who had come to the ED as an “activated stroke.” While performing the scan, Alison noticed that the patient also had an aortic dissection. She communicated this to the ED team, which ordered more imaging. The patient went STAT to the OR for repair of the aortic aneurysm.

Thanks to her attention to detail, clear communication and effective handoff, Alison caught a problem that is uncommon among stroke patients. In this case, the patient recovered well and was discharged home six days later.
