Good Catch Champion: Brian Fischer

December 28, 2022

Brian Fischer

Physical Therapy Assistant

HHC Rehabilitation Network

What happened:

Brian was taking his patient from the waiting room to the HHC Rehabilitation Network outpatient clinic in the Hartford Hospital Medical Office Building. He noticed the patient was having extreme difficulty standing and was showing significant left-side weakness when walking. On further questioning, the patient described left-lower extremity pain, neck pain, visual disturbances and headache. Brian took the patient’s vital signs and determined the patient urgently needed a medical evaluation. Because there was a 45-minute wait for Patient Transport, Brian and a colleague got a transport chair and brought the patient to the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department. It was the right call. The patient needed and received prompt medical care for stroke.

Safety behaviors demonstrated:

Brian’s attention to detail and above-and-beyond discretionary effort quickly got the patient to the right level of care for the best possible outcome.
