Marisa Spineti

Registered Nurse

B9I/Cardiothoracic Surgical

Hartford Hospital

What happened:

A patient was being admitted to the ICU following cardiac surgery. Marisa, the admitting nurse, noticed that the intravenous insulin (used to control blood sugar) and propofol (a sedative) were mislabeled in the pump. As a result, the propofol was infusing lower than needed to sedate the patient. She notified the PA and the attending who were part of the admitting team and they fixed the IV pump. The patient was quickly provided the correct doses of the medications.

Safety behaviors demonstrated:

Marisa’s attention to detail ensured that medications were given as directed.
