Joan Daley Brown

Patient Transport

St. Vincent’s Medical Center

What happened:

Joan was assigned to transport a patient from the Emergency Department to an inpatient unit. When she arrived, she noticed that the patient looked unwell and called to activate a Medical Emergency Team (MET) response.

Joan’s instincts were on target. The patient was experiencing hyperglycemia, hypotension and tachycardia. The MET administered insulin and was able to stabilize the patient.

Safety behavior demonstrated:

Because she practiced attention to detail (STAR: Stop-Think-Act-Review), Miriam’s persistence and clear and collaborative communication enabled this patient to get the medical attention he needed.
