Good Catch Champion: Miriam Muller
June 13, 2022
Miriam Muller
Registered Nurse
Hartford HealthCare at Home
What happened:
Miriam was caring for a patient with a history of heart failure. She responded when the patient began complaining of shortness of breath and was getting weaker to the point that he could not stand up.
She called the cardiologist to describe the worsening symptoms, but the cardiologist did not feel it was urgent or heart failure. Miriam persisted, reaching out to her manager and following her gut noting, “He just doesn’t look right.”
With Miriam’s persistence, the cardiologist ultimately agreed the patient needed to be assessed. 911 was called and the patient was admitted and diagnosed with a congestive heart failure exacerbation.
Safety behavior demonstrated:
Because she practiced attention to detail (STAR: Stop-Think-Act-Review), Miriam’s persistence and clear and collaborative communication enabled this patient to get the medical attention he needed.
