ECMO for Healthcare Providers

Hartford Hospital is the only hospital in the region to offer a 24/7 mobile ECMO program with a highly trained team of Heart & Vascular Institute clinicians. Through our dedicated 860.972.ECMO line, we pledge to get you the quick expertise that you and your patients need.

One phone call to 860.972.ECMO (860.972.3266) starts the process of rapid deployment of our specially trained staff to get you the quick help that you need.

Think one of your patients needs ECMO? Not sure? Call us now and let us help you decide.

When to Think About ECMO

  • Hypotension despite multiple vasopressors.
  • Cardiogenic shock refractory to available therapies.
  • Respiratory failure requiring prolonged ventilation with high vent settings.
  • Hypoxia despite escalating oxygen and PEEP requirements for more than 48 hours.
  • Cardiac arrest with return of spontaneous circulation in a potentially viable patient.

What Happens When I Call 972-ECMO?

Your call will go directly to the Hartford HealthCare Care Logistics Center. There, a nurse will gather clinical information about your patient. This gets sent directly to our dedicated ECMO physician on call to review. You will receive a call back from the ECMO physician within 15 minutes to further discuss the patient and determine the best course of action.

What if My Patient Does not Qualify for ECMO?

If it is determined that your patient does not qualify for ECMO at that time, the ECMO physician will offer alternative treatment therapies and help guide care, whether it be at your facility, or at Hartford Hospital.

Who Can Request an ECMO Consultation?

Any physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner directly involved with the patient can call.

Who Comes to Perform the Procedure?

Every ECMO-on-the-GO team includes one or two ECMO physicians, a perfusionist and a two-member LIFE STAR crew.

How Can We Prepare for the Team’s Arrival?
