Bio

NEARLY 60,000 PEOPLE IN CONNECTICUT LIVE WITH EPILEPSY EVERY DAY.

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF EPILEPSY AND SEIZURES CAN REALLY COME OUT OF NOWHERE.

JOINING US FROM HARTFORD HOSPITAL IS EPILEPTOLOGIST DOCTOR ERICA SCHUYLER.

THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US.

Thank you for having me!

Q1. THOSE SEIZURES CAN SOMETIMES CATCH PEOPLE OFF GUARD COME OUT OF NOWHERE, WHAT IS EPILEPSY?

A. Epilepsy is recurrent, unprovoked seizures – caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy is different from person to person. Seizures typically last from a few seconds to a few minutes and consist of convulsions or shaking. Other times, a patient will simply become unresponsive and stare into space. There’s no one-size-fits-all seizure; in fact, some patients with epilepsy experience more than one type of seizure.

Q2. AT HARTFORD HOSPITAL YOU HAVE A 24-HOUR MONITORING UNIT - HOW THIS IS HELPING TO TREAT PATIENTS?

A. For some patients, it is hard to tell by description alone whether the symptoms they are experiencing are seizures or something else. We can admit these patients to our specialized inpatient unit and make a definitive diagnosis. In our patients who continue to have seizures despite medical therapy, we can record the seizures in our unit and collect the information we need to determine if there may be a surgical cure for their seizures.

AND for some patients who can’t come into the hospital, we also offer video and EEG monitoring that can be done in a person’s home for up to 72 hours.

Q3. HOW SERIOUS OF A PROBLEM IS EPILEPSY?

A. Well, it is estimated that over 60,000 people in the state of CT alone have epilepsy. Our mission is to provide the most advanced care to our patients and to stop their seizures.

Q4. WHAT ARE THE STEPS IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED? TAKE US THROUGH WHAT HAPPENS…

A. Well if you or someone who know has a single or recurrent seizures, they are often seen first by a primary care doctor or an emergency department. From there, a referral can be made to our center. We provide comprehensive care from our team of epilepsy specialists, psychologists, and support services.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR BEING ON OUR PROGRAM. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EPILEPSY CALL 1-855.HHC.HERE.
