Backus Hospital’s Edward and Mary Lord Emergency Care and Trauma Center is one of the most modern emergency departments statewide.
As part of a recent expansion, the ED is nearly double its former size to accommodate continually increasing patient volume – more than 60,000 visits per year. Despite this increase, the department routinely places among the top percentile nationwide for patient satisfaction.
The emergency departments are fully staffed with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, as well as a staff of nurses and technicians specializing in emergency medicine, trauma, and critical care.
The ERs work in collaboration with emergency services such as LifeStar, trauma surgeons and nurses, various emergency transport companies throughout eastern Connecticut, and the diagnostic and testing laboratories and departments throughout the hospital to provide its patients with the most comprehensive medical treatment possible.
The main hospital ER has 42 beds, including nine beds in the Convenient Care area of the department. In Plainfield, there are 12 beds and also diagnostic imaging and lab services.
All physicians are Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and/or pediatric emergency medicine.
