Every tumor of the nervous system is unique. Each neuro-oncology patient at Hartford Healthcares's Neuroscience Institute receives personal, individualized care.

Our neuro-oncologists also connect patients with clinical trials offering the most promising advances in treating tumors, and many other resources patients (and their families) need.

Cancer of the brain and spine is treatable. Our healthcare system is only one of few in New England with the capability of utilizing beam radiation with stereotactic radiosurgery to treat tumors in or around the spinal cord and brain. With the use of MRI scan; including MRI spectroscopy, functional MRI (fMRI), CT scan, PET scan our doctors are afforded the high quality tools to diagnose and treat cancer.

Here's more on clinical trials from Dr. Ahmad Daher, medical director of the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute's neuro-oncology program:

Awake Craniotomy

Our awake craniotomy program uses brain mapping and functional MRI (fMRI) to determine where critical language areas reside in the brain. Using this new and amazing technology, we can now "map" a patient's brain before removing their tumor. During surgery, we have developed a special team of neurologists, neuropsychologists and neurosurgeons that work closely with the patient by testing their language function at the same time that their tumor is being removed. It is another testament to the dedication and commitment that our department continuously strives to provide the highest level of skill and care for all of our patients.

Patient Support After Treatment

We have an active brain tumor survivors support group for patients and their caregivers regardless of where they receive treatment.

A Team Approach to Neuro-Oncology

A multidisciplinary team of neuro-oncology specialists determines the best course of treatment for each patient situation: neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuro-pathologists, neuro-oncologists, neuro-radiologists and radiation oncologists. They present each case with an even broader team of specialists from across the Cancer Institute, ensuring that every available option is considered in creating the best treatment plan.

Our dedicated team utilizes the latest technologies to treat cancer of the brain and spine. This multidisciplinary team approach provides for streamlined care from diagnosis to discharge.

When you hear the word cancer, there’s a whole range of emotions that washes over you – shock, anger, fear.
