Medical Oncology & Hematology

A Leader in Diagnosing and Treating Leukemia, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma and Myelodysplastic Syndrome

Cure and survival rates are improving significantly for hematologic cancers including Leukemia, Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma. The hematopathologists at Hartford HealthCare are true experts in their field, with nationally-recognized reputations.

Our leading-edge hematologic cancer treatments include extensive molecular studies that target drugs to specific mutations. It's hard to match this level of truly personalized cancer care, and the access to clinical trials with our partner Memorial Sloan Kettering. The Cancer Institute is also one of the few centers in Connecticut with specialized orthopedic oncology experts treating bony complications of myeloma, and offering stereotactic body radiation for early stage lymphoma and painful lesions in myeloma.

Hospitals throughout New England call upon our experts to assist with diagnosis and special studies including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry to determine tumor aggressiveness, and molecular genetics. We’re now researching mutations that reveal the mechanism of how these diseases start, and using this information to guide treatments.

With improved medications and new medical technologies, we are expanding treatment possibilities for patients with hematologic cancers – sometimes even managing these cancers as chronic illnesses. Our compassionate care includes experienced oncology nurses, friendly laboratory technicians and convenient infusion services.

Oncology & Hematology Treatment Options

The Newest Cancer Treatments

We use a range of targeted therapies including monoclonal and radiolabeled antibodies, b-cell receptor inhibitors, bcl-2 inhibitors and PI3-K inhibitors in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and immunotherapy in Hodgkin's lymphoma (Nivolumab). Targeted therapies have dramatically advanced the treatment of Leukemia and Lymphoma, and improved the prognosis for Multiple Myeloma.

New white cell growth factors minimize risk of infection, and our infusion center collaborates with lab technicians to provide same-day red blood cell transfusions. These therapies are used in conjunction with traditional external beam radiation and improved, less toxic chemotherapies. With better anti-emetic medications and complementary therapies like Reiki and acupuncture, we help patients manage treatment side effects.

With the newer, less toxic drugs now available, we can treat many patients that could not previously tolerate treatment. We use molecular genetics and next generation sequencing to identify therapeutic targets for illnesses like CML, lymphoma, ALL, AML, CLL and hairy cell leukemia. Sophisticated molecular biology testing at the Cancer Institute finds helpful mutation information that identifies targets of treatment. Our team is supported by excellent infectious disease specialists who help us keep immuno-suppressed patients as healthy as possible.

Comfortable On-Site Infusion and Fast Laboratory Results

Most patients will receive outpatient treatment for Lymphoma or Multiple Myeloma. Patients may have private or group infusion rooms and are treated by hematologic oncology nurses certified by the Oncology Nursing Society. Many of them have been with the Cancer Institute for a decade - or even two. They offer extraordinary experience and compassion in delivering efficient and professional infusion treatments.

Patients are always kept well informed of blood test results and receive most scan results within 24 hours. Patients on Coumadin therapy are closely monitored and doses are adjusted immediately to avoid potential blood clots. We make infusion treatments as efficient as possible for patients.

Our Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Patients get every resource and specialist they need from a multidisciplinary team of experts lead by a hematologist/oncologist. Patients and their families are considered part of the team, which includes their primary care physician, hematolpathologists, radiologists and radiation oncologists as well as our dedicated hematologic malignancies nurse navigator. They help coordinate appointments with radiation oncology, expedite referrals to outside institutions as needed, and link patients with nutritionists and counselors.

An even broader group of experienced cancer specialists from across the Cancer Institute meets weekly to discuss complex cases. In addition, particularly difficult cases are presented quarterly at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Conference.
