Breast Cancer Services

Connecticut has the second-highest breast cancer rate in the nation. The state has a critical need for the best-available treatment, supplemented by the latest advancements from the country’s top cancer researchers.

That’s exactly what our Breast Cancer Program offers, with nationally recognized treatments and an ongoing collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York – the country’s premier cancer center – that gives us, and you, the latest standards of treatment and developments from the most recent clinical research trials.

You get the best of both clinical worlds. Hartford HealthCare’s membership in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance gives you the benefit of clinical expertise and research trials while being treated close to home, where you want to stay, by the largest breast cancer specialist group in Connecticut.

Every week, cancer specialists from across the Cancer Institute meet to discuss complex breast cancer cases like yours. But it’s more than that. We want to know everything possible about your condition before we determine the appropriate treatment.

So your care team includes primary care and OB GYN physicians, breast and oncologic surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and medical oncologists. At the center of it: You and your family.

We know more about cancer than ever. Someday, the clinical research trials and advancements in technology might eliminate breast cancer everywhere. But it starts today with better care for you.

Risk Assessment

What is your risk of developing breast cancer?  Use this National Cancer Institute risk assessment tool and watch this video on cancer care at MidState Medical Center:

Support for Breast Cancer Patients

Breast MRI

An MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. Telemetry units and infusion pumps may not enter the magnet, and patients with a pacemaker cannot have an MRI. Patients with aneurysm clips, filters or stents, metallic implants and injuries involving metal fragments will need to be evaluated to determine if an MRI can be performed.

Physical and Integrative Therapies

Breast cancer patients say healing always combines treating the body while caring for the mind and spirit. Physical therapists specializing in breast cancer will help with post-operative healing and lymphedema. To ease the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation and support overall wellness, we also recommend integrative therapies like Reiki, acupuncture and therapeutic touch.

Counseling

Individual and family supports are an important part of recovery. Social workers, psychotherapists, nutritionists, genetic counselors and even financial counselors are available.

The Boutique

At The Boutique, you’ll find a convenient and comfortable shopping space for mastectomy products, lymphedema sleeves, wigs, scarves, hats and caps. And of course you care how you look. We’ll let you know about styling salons that specialize in wigs and stores in surrounding communities that carry mastectomy products.

Nurse Navigators

At Hartford HealthCare, breast cancer nurse navigators will guide you and your family throughout treatment and, even later, when you’re getting back to a normal routine. We’ll help you understand your diagnosis and test results, arrange appointments with specialists on your care team, answer questions and provide educational information.

Support Groups and Programs

Patient support is also available through support groups and educational programs.

Community Outreach for Breast Cancer Prevention

Ultimately, eliminating breast cancer means caring for the entire community through breast cancer prevention and early detection programs.

The Cancer Institute’s outreach programs emphasize:

  • Maintaining breast health with self-exams.
  • When to schedule mammograms.
  • How to assess personal risks for breast cancer.

Our Digital Mobile Mammography Program brings high-tech digital screening for breast cancer to our local communities. Grant funds and charitable donations help pay for the mammograms of those in need.

Staying Well After Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer survivors naturally have concerns about ongoing wellness. Our survivorship program was designed to care for patients beyond their cancer treatment. Patients stay connected to supportive care with a comprehensive summary of their medical records, surveillance-program recommendations and detailed wellness-care plans. It’s valuable peace of mind.
