Gastric Cancer

Gastric Cancers (gastrointestinal stromal tumors or GISTs) occur in the digestive system.

Meet Our Gastric Cancer Specialists

About half of GISTs occur in the stomach, but they can occur anywhere in the digestive system – in the esophagus, liver, stomach, gall bladder, large and small intestines and rectum. In 2016, over 26,000 cases of stomach cancer were expected in the United States, with significantly more men than women diagnosed. Incidence is particularly high among people of Korean and Japanese descent, and Korea has the highest rate of stomach cancer worldwide. The presence of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the strongest risk factor for stomach cancer.

These cancers are sometimes also called Gastric myoblastoma and Gastricmyosarcoma. Stomach cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy.

Gastric cancer patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team of gastrointestinal cancer experts, who consider patients and their families part of the team. In addition to gastrointestinal specialists, the team includes surgeons, medical oncologists, pathologists and radiation oncology experts. Each week specialists from across the Cancer Institute come together to address the most complex gastric cancer cases.

A dedicated team of nurse practitioners helps gastric cancer patients manage issues and symptoms. Integrative medicine techniques like Reiki and accupuncture help manage symptoms. Our gastric cancer patients benefit from the latest treatment protocols of Memorial Sloan Kettering - the country’s premier cancer center. This means patients have direct access to world-renowned clinical expertise and research trials - all while being treated close to home.

What Are Symptoms of Gastric Cancer?

In the early stages, symptoms may include:

  • Indigestion and stomach discomfort or pain
  • Bloated feeling after eating
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Heartburn

In more advanced stages, the symptoms may include:

  • Blood in the stool
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach pain
  • Jaundice
  • Ascites (a build-up of fluid in the abdomen)
  • Trouble swallowing

What Are Treatments for Gastric Cancer?

Surgery is the most common treatment for gastric cancer. Complete treatment options may include one or more of the following: removal of part of the stomach, removal of the entire stomach, stent placement to open the passage into or out of the stomach, laser therapy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

New types of treatments are being studied in clinical trials.

What Are Risk Factors for Gastric Cancer?

Age, diet and previous stomach disease can increase the risk of gastric cancer. Older men and people who smoke have a higher risk of gastric cancer. Other factors increasing the risk:

  • Eating highly salted or smoked foods
  • A diet low in fruits and vegetables
  • Eating foods that have been improperly stored
  • A family history of stomach cancer

How is Gastric Cancer Diagnosed?

Procedures and tests used to diagnose gastric cancer:

  • Blood chemistry studies
  • A complete blood count
  • An upper endoscopy
  • An upper GI series using a barium swallow
  • A CT scan
  • A biopsy
