Keeping the Shoreline Working

When Abhijay Karandikar first entered medical school, he didn’t know much about the field of occupational medicine, and didn’t envision becoming a specialist in it. But by the time he entered his residency, he recognized it as an emerging specialty that offered a unique opportunity for a wide range of responsibilities and services.

“It’s truly multi-faceted, which is what I find rewarding about it,” said Dr. Karandikar, who now sees patients in the Backus Family Health Center.

Karandikar offers a wide range of job-related medical services, including:

  • Department of Transportation medical exams
  • Drug testing and medical review officer (MRO) services
  • Management of work-related injuries and illnesses
  • Disability exams
  • Vaccines and other travel medicine services
  • Population health management
  • Employee health
  • Medical surveillance
  • HAZMAT physical exams
  • Second opinion evaluations – determining work relatedness, impairment, etc.
  • Independent Medical Evaluations
  • Fitness for Duty evaluations

Karandikar says there is an increasing demand for clinicians trained in the art and science of occupational medicine as workplaces are becoming more complex.

“The specialty allows me to work not only as a clinician, but also as an educator, a keeper of information, an investigator, a liaison between clinicians and human resources and other non-clinical personnel and a corporate consultant,” he says.
