Placing New Employee Hires, Transfers or Terminations on the Professional Liability Program

The program provides worldwide protection against professional liability claims which might be brought against you in your practice as a physician or surgeon.  Your professional liability protection covers you for damages resulting from:

  • You or your organization providing or withholding professional services
  • Providing or withholding professional services by anyone whose acts you are legally responsible for including, among others, your employees and volunteer workers when working within the scope of their assigned duties
  • Your service on a formal accreditation board or similar board or committee

Coverage Details

  • Insurance policies written by subsidiaries of CAN (AM Best rating of A XV)
  • January 1 renewal – simplified renewal process
  • Claims-made coverage
  • Occurrence coverage available (short term, per diem, limited work hours)
  • Annual limit options include $1M/$3M, $2M/$6M and $3M/$6M

Tail Coverage

Tail coverage may be purchased upon termination.

Indefinite time period to report claims under the extended reporting period policy endorsement until limits are exhausted.

Tail coverage at no cost:

  • If you die while covered under the program
  • If you retire from the practice of medicine after age 55 and have been continuously insurance with the HHCISL Independent Physician Insurance program for the last five years before retirement.
  • If you are totally and continuously disabled for at least six consecutive months and are unable to perform your former medical practice duties.

*Limits equal to or below the limits maintained while insured.

Premiums

Premium based on selected limits plus several factors including:

  • Full- or part time practice
  • Specialty
  • Surgery vs. non-surgery
  • Retro date
  • Additionally
  • No charge for PC or mid-levels
  • 50% premium credit for physicians new to practice
  • No charge for locum tenens
  • Risk management, CME and loss experience credits
  • Premium waiver for disability/maternity leave/leave of absence
  • Billed monthly

Eligibility and Participation

  • Active medical staff privileges in a participating Hartford HealthCare hospital required.
  • All group practice members must participate if accepted for entity coverage.
  • Application required for new members.
  • Optional prior acts coverage available.
