THE TESTING PROCESS FOR COVID-19 IS MORE COMPLEX THAN JUST SHOWING UP AT A TESTING SITE. THERE ARE SOME STEPS YOU HAVE TO TAKE BEFORE YOU SHOW UP.

DOCTOR WILLIAM HORGAN, MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF QUALITY AND SAFETY AT BACKUS AND WINDHAM HOSPITALS.

Q. DOCTOR, LET’S TALK ABOUT THOSE STEPS…WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR SOMEONE WHO THINKS THEY HAVE THE VIRUS AND NEEDS TO BE TESTED?

A. To be tested at a Hartford HealthCare drive-through site, patients must have a referral from a Hartford HealthCare Medical Group primary care provider. Patients experiencing symptoms who do not have a Hartford HealthCare Medical Group provider may also call the Hartford HealthCare Clinical Command Center at 860.972.8100 for a virtual health visit with a physician who will order the test if necessary.

Q. WHY IS HARTFORD HEALTHCARE RESPONDING TO COVID-19 WITH SUCH STRICT PRECAUTIONS?

A. COVID-19 is highly contagious. We know how aggressively it can spread. We want to keep possibly-infected patients out of the Emergency Department, doctors’ offices and urgent care facilities, so they don’t infect other patients and healthcare staff around them. By launching the drive-through testing sites, we can keep the patient contained and tested without exposing them to others.

Q. ASIDE FROM THE HARTFORD LOCATION, WHERE CAN WE FIND HARTFORD HEALTHCARE TESTING LOCATIONS?

A. Hartford HealthCare will have a total of 5 locations available. Today Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, MidState Medical Center in Meriden, and Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport opened. Tomorrow Backus Hospital will open their testing location.

Q. WHAT OTHER MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO KEEP PATIENTS AND THE POPULATION IN GENERAL SAFE?

A. Hartford HealthCare has instituted visitor restrictions at all of our hospitals. This is designed to keep patients in the hospital safe from infection and reduces the potential of the infection traveling from person to person. The restrictions are as much for the visitor’s safety as they are for the patient and hospital staff.
