Anthem

Hartford HealthCare is out of network with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield

Our contract expired on Sept. 30

After several months of negotiations, we were unable to reach an agreement on a contract with Anthem BlueCross and BlueShield.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2017, all Hartford HealthCare hospitals, ancillary providers and employed physicians are considered out of network for patients with Anthem commercial, exchange and Medicare Advantage plans.

Being out of network means that your care at the following Hartford HealthCare organizations will be covered at a lower rate by Anthem, resulting in higher out-of-pocket costs for you and your family:

  • Hartford Hospital (Hartford)
  • The Hospital of Central Connecticut (New Britain and Southington)
  • MidState Medical Center (Meriden)
  • Backus Hospital (Norwich)
  • Windham Hospital (Willimantic)
  • The Institute of Living
  • Jefferson House
  • Jerome Home
  • Natchaug Hospital
  • Rushford
  • Hartford HealthCare Medical Group
  • Hartford HealthCare at Home
  • Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network
  • Southington Care Center

We worked very hard to avoid this outcome and we will continue to pursue a resolution with Anthem. In the meantime, our number one priority is to ensure you have the resources to get the care you need during this time. We have posted the answers to frequently asked questions here. We are also available at 800.644.5905.

We are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible and want you to understand how your care at our facilities is affected.

  • Patients in an ongoing treatment program can request approval from Anthem to continue receiving services under their Continuation of Care program. If you think you qualify, call the number on the back of your insurance card or download the forms here. You or your provider must mail or fax the completed request for continuation of care to Anthem.
  • While we are out of Anthem’s network, Hartford HealthCare will send a bill directly to you for services you receive. You will be responsible for paying this amount.

We are working hard to resume our partnership with Anthem, and we are committed to reaching a fair agreement with Anthem — one that allows us to operate in a sustainable way while protecting access to caregivers you trust and providing the quality care you deserve. It is our hope that Anthem will work in good faith to agree to a new contract.

We will continue to keep you updated throughout our negotiations. Again, if you have questions, please call us at 800.644.5905 or visit this website.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this process.

Sincerely,

David A. Whitehead
Executive Vice President
