Honoring World Suicide Prevention Day

September 08, 2016

Each year, over 42,000 people commit suicide in the United States, making suicide the tenth leading cause of death in the nation.

On Friday, September 9, Hartford Hospital's Institute of Living and the Hartford HealthCare Behavioral Health Network held a flag lowering ceremony in front of the main hospital. This ceremony helps raise awareness about the need for continued work on suicide prevention, and honors those who have died by their own hand.

See photos of this moving ceremony below.

Suicide is preventable, according to psychiatrist Dr. Linda Durst, Medical Director of the Hartford Hospital Institute of Living.

Dr. Durst speaks with WTIC's Ray Dunaway about suicide prevention in this Connect to Healthier: Short podcast.
