Hartford HealthCare Headache Center Awarded Inaugural IMPACT Grant from Migraine Research Foundation

Dr. Brian Grosberg, medical director of the Hartford HealthCare Headache Program, was awarded the first-ever Migraine Research Foundation “Impact” Award, a $250,000 grant designed to fund leading-edge research on status migrainosus, a severe form of migraine that lasts longer than three days.

Hartford HealthCare’s Dr. Brian Grosberg shares the award with Harvard University’s Dr. Rami Burstein. The two internationally-known headache specialists will use the award to study long lasting migraines that have no clear cut, documented evidence-based treatment. Until now, many were treated with different drugs—that clinicians choose using trial and error. This becomes the first scientific study that will delve into patients and their specific characteristics so science can better predict how to treat and prevent this kind of migraine. This critical project could have an enormous impact on migraine sufferers and lead to better, more effective and more personalized treatment for all status migrainosus patients.

“I am honored to have been granted this award to better serve my patients and headache sufferers here and across the globe,” said Brian Grosberg, M.D. “We know that status migrainosus sufferers need fast, aggressive treatment, because the longer a migraine lasts, the harder it is to stop. Often, usual rescue medications don't work. By studying this specific issue, we will learn better what works and help the millions who suffer from this condition.”
