Taking a deeper look at Connecticut’s first and only orthopedic hospital – the Bone and Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital. The hospital has been open now for just over a month. Within the hospital is the Center for Musculoskeletal Health, which includes an assessment center, physical therapy, and even fitness classes Wendy Nichols, a physical therapist who oversees the Center for Musculoskeletal Health, explains.

Q. What makes the Center for Musculoskeletal Health Different?
A. At the center, we treat the whole patient not just their injury or ailment to get them better quicker. If they’re a smoker, we can get them help to quit smoking. If they need to see a nutritionist we can set that up too… or even integrative medicine to help with a holistic approach. We also do some really unique things when it comes to rehabilitation, from elite athletes to people with arthritis, we run them through a complete assessment to get them back to what they love to do as quickly as possible.

Q. What are services you can use if you need to enhance your performance?
A. We have the motion lab that can look at how a pitcher throws or how a golfer swings, how an athlete jumps or runs to identify any issues putting them at risk for injury… At the Bone and Joint Institute, we also have the anti-gravity treadmill… this is good for elite athletes looking to train harder for marathons, and other major sporting events without putting too much strain on their joints. It’s also good for people who may have an injury and need to take it easy on their joints. We also have fitness classes starting soon which range from weight lifting for seniors to boot camp and yoga.

Q. There’s an event coming up where people can come take an up-close look and even try some things out?
A. On March 7th at 5pm we will be having an open house to let the community take an up-close look and try a few things out including meeting with fitness instructors, trying the anti-gravity treadmill and more. There are only 20 spots, so people should book now to reserve their spot.
