There is a new x-factor in town! Hartford HealthCare is using this exciting leading-edge technology called Mazor X, a sophisticated surgical robotics system for spine procedures. Hartford HealthCare is the first health care system in the state and throughout the Northeast to debut this new technique. Dr. Andy Wakefield, a neurosurgeon at Hartford Hospital, explains.

Q. Describe the Mazor X…How does it work?
A. Mazor X is a rigid, highly accurate, interoperative robotic arm that we can download high-resolution imaging of the patient's spine and use that to plan, personalize and place spinal instrumentation to treat the patients.

Q. What type of patient is the ideal candidate for this type of robotic surgery?
A. Patients that have spinal problems that need to be treated with spinal instrumentation (like screws) to help stabilize and to get the spine to fuse, as well as to treat their underlying problems and ailments. The placement of screws can be done highly-accurately with the laser arm.

Q. What are the clinical benefits of Mazor X?
A. We’re able to actually personalize the instrumentation to match the patient's anatomy. There is less exposure of the spine which will help the patient with post-operative discomfort and get them moving faster.

Q. What is the recovery like for patients?
A. Recovery tends to be faster because with less need to expose the spine. In other words, you do it using a less invasive or more minimally invasive technique so their post-operative pain is less and they can mobilize faster and their recovery is quicker.
