Medical Rounds with Amy Schroder

Nurses play an important role in health care, and in honor of the great work that they do each and every day, we are celebrating nurses. We sat down with Amy Schroder, Nurse Manager, Labor and Delivery, Hartford Hospital to talk about the nursing role and how it has evolved.

Q. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A NURSE?
A. I believe being a nurse is a privilege. Patients place their trust in us when they are at their most vulnerable. Nurses listen, observe, empathize, advocate, protect, communicate and coordinate. Our unique role is to connect with patients, educate them, and place them in the best situation to stay healthy.

Q. WHAT IS THE MISSION AT HARTFORD HOSPITAL?
A. The mission of Hartford Hospital is to improve the health and healing of the people and the communities we serve. Nurses are at the forefront of this mission, hour to hour and day to day.

Q. WHAT IS THE THEME FOR THIS YEAR’S NURSES WEEK?
A. “Culture of Safety: It starts with YOU.” Safety is a core value of nursing practice. Nurses have a critical responsibility to uphold the highest level of quality and standards in their practice, including fostering a safe work environment.

Outside of our professional lives, in our own communities, we advocate for safety in schools, on playgrounds and sports fields, roads and highways, as well as home environments.

Q. THIS IS THE TIME WHEN WE ALSO RECOGNIZE NURSES WITH A SPECIAL NIGHTINGALE AWARD… TELL US ABOUT THAT.
A. 160 years ago, Florence Nightingale took the profession of nursing to a new level establishing requirements for education and standards of conduct. She had a great influence on the hospital environment controlling infection, ensuring nutrition and warmth, and relieving pain. Today nursing focuses on patient outcomes and uses data to guide and improve our practice.

Nightingale award recipients, who are nominated by their peers, exemplify nursing excellence by making a significant impact to patient care or the nursing profession. They are an inspiration to their coworkers and to future nurses. It is a wonderful honor to be chosen as a Nightingale winner.

Q. SINCE YOU BEGAN AS A NURSE, HOW HAS THE PROFESSION EVOLVED?
A. As healthcare has evolved and become highly complex, nurses find themselves at the center of multiple disciplines and specialties coordinating care for patients. In addition to the direct care that nurses provide, we are an integral part of fostering communication between members of the care team and the patient and their family.
Nursing is a practice based on science, art, advocacy and ethics. Nurses are highly skilled clinicians prepared with a rigorous education in the sciences. Their knowledge base continues to grow and expand to meet the needs of the time, be it the threat of Ebola or the Zika virus. Nurses bring forward the best science and technology to care for today’s complex patients and conditions.

What remains the same over time is the personalized care, comfort and connection that nurses bring to their patients.
